Overview of new roles in the London market in the first half of November 2024.

Halfway through the final quarter of the year and it appears that the London recruitment market is definitely on an upward trajectory.  The number of new roles each month has been rising in the last few months and in particular the number of transactional roles within private practice has been increasing.

In the first half of November we saw an additional 56 new roles being advertised by law firms and 129 new inhouse roles in the London market.

Private Practice:

If transactional areas are busy then this tends to be good for the recruitment market as it suggests that firms are busy or are confident that they will be busy. Busy corporate teams will mean that many of the corporate support roles will be busier and so when a firm has a leaver it will be more likely that they will want to fill the space that the will create.

Bearing this in mind it is helpful to keep an eye on the corporate market. Whilst corporate was quiet in the first half of 2024, since July recruitment for corporate roles has been on a steady increase.

In the first half of 2024, the number of new corporate role being advertised by firms on their career sites averaged at just over 7, but since July the average has been around 12 roles.  In the first half of November there were ten new roles advertised (one with a US firm, seven with UK international firms and three with City Regional Firms).

If the second half of the month produces the same number of new corporate roles its will be the busiest month for corporate so far this year.

Of the 56 roles that were new:

  • 34 of the roles were suitable for junior or mid-level lawyers

  • Two of the roles were PSL roles

  • 11 firms added two or more roles.

  • 55% of the new roles were with UK international firms

  • Corporate was the busiest transactional area with 10 new roles

  • Private Client and Employment were the busiest advisory areas with six and five new roles respectively.

  • Litigation was quieter than usual with only four new roles.
