As the global push toward net zero intensifies, law firms are playing a pivotal role in guiding clients through the complex legal landscape of energy transition, infrastructure modernisation, and sustainability investment.
April and May saw several firms announce their involvement in a wave of activity across the UK and international markets, with firms advising on everything from battery storage projects and CCS networks to offshore wind financings and smart metering acquisitions.
Here’s a round-up of some of the deals and the firms behind them:
Flagship Projects in Renewables
Allen & Overy led on the financing of Poland’s largest offshore wind project, Baltic Power - a landmark deal for the region’s clean energy trajectory.
CMS had a particularly active period, advising Eku Energy on the £45m financing of the Ocker Hill battery storage project, the sale of a 1GW BESS portfolio to Matrix Renewables, and the sale of Transmission Investment to TAQA - all reinforcing its credentials in energy storage and infrastructure M&A.
Burges Salmon was equally prolific, guiding Aukera Energy on a £135m solar development facility, CNG Fuels on clean fuel infrastructure expansion, and OPDC on heat network development in London’s largest regeneration area.
DLA Piper advised on several large-scale renewable financings - from the €600m Finnish onshore wind projects for Santander, to a $450m industrial parks facility for Afreximbank and a £150m financing of Scotland’s Pencloe Wind Farm. The firm also advised on power purchase deals and a $100m green methanol investment.
Carbon Capture, Energy Storage & Circular Economy
Ashurst acted for the UK Government on closing the Liverpool Bay CCS project - a critical net-zero milestone.
Linklaters advised Eni on the UK’s first carbon capture transportation network and also handled Macquarie’s £900m acquisition of a UK smart metering business.
Stephenson Harwood added to its energy and environmental portfolio with advice on Enviroo’s bottle-to-bottle PET recycling plant and Apollo’s acquisition of Hav Energy’s LNG infrastructure platform.
Watson Farley & Williams continued its strong performance in energy infrastructure with debt financings for the Pencloe wind farm and Eku Energy’s Tesla-powered BESS facility.
Green Bonds & Grid Upgrades
Freshfields advised Getlink SE on a €600m senior secured green bond - boosting sustainable transport via the Channel Tunnel.
Norton Rose Fulbright supported the UK’s National Wealth Fund on a £600m facility to ScottishPower for major grid upgrades and acted on Schroders Greencoat’s £456m offshore wind acquisition from Ørsted.
Hogan Lovells provided Barclays with advice on a £250m facility for solar energy expansion and supported Helios Energy on a Bio Capital stake sale, reinforcing its anaerobic digestion investment expertise.
Advising the Future
Beyond the megadeals, firms like Shoosmiths, TLT, Womble Bond Dickinson, and Osborne Clarke demonstrated the depth of legal work happening at a local and sectoral level - from sustainable forestry and mine water heat networks to solar park real estate advice and cooperative PPAs with RWE.
